Legendary Musician Left an Indelible Mark on Rock History

Country-Infused Songwriting and Blazing Guitar Work Defined His Career

Dickey Betts, the guitarist and singer-songwriter who co-founded the Allman Brothers Band and wrote some of their biggest hits, has died. He was 80 years old.

Betts' family announced his death on Thursday, April 14. He passed away at his home in Florida.

Betts was a key figure in the Allman Brothers Band, which formed in 1969. His country-inflected songwriting and blazing lyrical guitar work were a major part of the band's sound. He wrote or co-wrote some of their most famous songs, including "Ramblin' Man," "Dreams," and "Blue Sky."

Betts left the Allman Brothers Band in 1977, but he continued to perform and record as a solo artist. He also reunited with the band on several occasions, most recently in 2014.

Betts was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995 as a member of the Allman Brothers Band. He was also a recipient of the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012.

Dickey Betts will be remembered as one of the most influential guitarists of his generation. His music continues to inspire fans around the world.
