SARASOTA COUNTY, Fla. - Dickey Betts, a driving force behind the Allman Brothers Band that launched Southern rock and influenced the jam band scene, died April 18 at his Florida home, according to his publicist. He was 80.

Betts' country-inflected songwriting and blazing lyrical guitar work opposite Duane Allman in the Allman Brothers Band helped define the Southern rock genre in the 1970s. Standout tracks like "Sweet Virginia" and "Bougainvillea" showcased his unique style and songwriting prowess.

After departing from the Allman Brothers Band in 2000, Betts continued to tour heavily with his group Great Southern, which eventually evolved into the Dickey Betts Band. He remained an influential figure in the music world, known for his distinctive guitar playing and soulful vocals.
